What are Worn Teeth?

Do you have a few worn or chipped teeth? You’re not alone. It’s not uncommon for adults of all ages to have a few worn teeth. These can typically be caused by factors such as consuming acidic foods, having a misaligned bite and grinding teeth. Medical conditions such as acid reflux also contribute to how quickly your teeth get worn.

How Can Worn Teeth Be Treated?

Worn teeth can increase the risk of decay, cause tooth sensitivity, and even make it difficult to chew and create an uneven bite. To avoid this our Specialist Prosthodontist at Mornington Prosthodontics  will often opt for one of the following solutions:

  • Night guards: Similar to sports guards, a night guard can help reduce tooth grinding when you sleep. This is usually recommended when your teeth have minor wear and grinding or we want to protect your teeth and restorations. As part of prosthodontic care, night guards are remarkably effective for preventing damage from nighttime tooth grinding.
  • Dental Crowns: Typically, a dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth. Also called caps, dental crowns are an effective way to restore the strength and appearance of teeth. They can also increase the function of your teeth, making biting and chewing easier.
  • Veneers: These are another effective form of cosmetic dentistry and involve bonding a thin custom covering to the front of your teeth. For the most part, veneers can help to cover normal wear, chips, cracks, and even close gaps between teeth. Porcelain veneers can last between over 10 years if they are properly maintained.
  • Composite Restorations: A versatile and conservative solution for restoring both function and aesthetics, composite restorations help repair tooth wear while preserving natural tooth structure. They can be applied as veneers to enhance the front of your teeth or as full-surface build-ups to restore overall tooth integrity. While they may not be as durable as crowns or porcelain veneers, composite restorations offer an effective and more budget-friendly option for rejuvenating worn teeth.

Our Specialist Prosthodontist may opt to use both veneers and dental crowns, depending on the severity and location of your worn teeth. It will also depend on the types of dental treatments you already have.

Signs that You Should Get Your Worn Teeth Fixed

People are more likely to tolerate worn teeth if they’re in the back of the mouth. However, our Specialist Prosthodontist warns that this can cause further damage. Always opt for having your worm teeth repaired in the following instances:

  • You’re experiencing pain and discomfort, especially when eating
  • Worn or chipped teeth are causing additional dental issues
  • You want to fix your beautiful smile

Top Benefits of Treating Worn Teeth

Many people choose to ignore worn teeth if they are in the back of their mouths. But this can lead to pain, extractions, or difficulty chewing and eating food. Tooth sensitivity can also make drinking uncomfortable.

Having to repair worn teeth offers several benefits. The most significant of these include the following:

  • Improved biting and chewing
  • Less or no pain when eating
  • Reduced or zero tooth sensitivity
  • Allows for better oral health
  • Creates better smile aesthetics
  • It can boost confidence, especially if the worn teeth are in the front of your mouth

Having an Idea of the General Cost of Fixing Worn Teeth

Opting to repair worn teeth can depend on a variety of factors. This can include the number of teeth you need to be repaired, whether you need minor repairs of more complex procedures such as dental crowns and bonding, as well as the severity of the wear.

Our Specialist Prosthodontist at Mornington Prosthodontics will also need to assess the level of tooth wear and whether there is additional damage to other teeth or your gums. With this in mind, the cost to fix worn teeth could range from a simple filling to complex crowns and changing your bite.  Following a consultation and accurate assessment of your tooth wear, our experienced Prosthodontist at Mornington Prosthodontics will provide a detailed quote and treatment plan to meet your dental needs.

FAQs

What is prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is a formally recognised specialist branch of dentistry dedicated to the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth. Common prosthodontic treatments include dentures, dental implants, crowns and bridges. Once they have graduated from dental school, a prosthodontist receives three extra years of training in their chosen field.

Prosthodontists are trained in the field of crown and bridgework, veneers, implant reconstruction, denture work, occlusion, temporomandibular joint function and complex full-mouth oral rehabilitation.

Why do I need to see a prosthodontist?

All dentists are trained in making crowns, bridges, and partial and complete dentures, so why would you need to see a prosthodontist? Prosthodontists are experts in their field. With an additional three years of training, they are much more equipped than your regular dentist to replace anything in your mouth.

Prosthodontists have a specialised skill set to treat, plan, diagnose and manage intricate dental problems. They frequently work in a multi-disciplinary environment with other specialists and are skilled in biomaterials, biomechanics, function and aesthetics.

Do I need a referral?

Patients are often referred to us by their general dental practitioner. A referral gives us a much better understanding of your oral history and any problems you’ve had previously, including how they were managed. Alongside your history, be sure to bring in any past x-rays, exam results or other relevant material for your prosthodontist to discuss.
