What Exactly is an All-On-X Dental Implant Procedure

Do you have a few missing teeth in your mouth? Are they on the same arch (side)? Does this leave you struggling to eat and speak properly?  It may be time to speak to a Mornington prosthodontist for an all-on-x dental implant procedure. Many people are under the impression that an “all-on-x dental implant” is the same as the “all-on-4 dental implant”. This assumption comes from both procedures involving titanium implants being inserted into the jaw bone.

The essential difference is that the all-on-4 procedure only uses four strategically placed titanium supports, while the all-on-x dental implant caters for a more customised number of implants. The number of implants you require will depend on the condition of your mouth and how much jaw bone is available.

How Do All-On-X Dental Implants Work?

Essentially, in the “all-on-X dental implant treatment” our Specialist Prosthodontist will plan to replace a full-arch of teeth with a fixed dental-implant support bridge on the ideal number of implants for you.  We will work alongside specialist oral surgeons or periodontists who will carry out the surgical aspects to the highest standards. Here’s how it works:

  • Our experienced prosthodontist at Mornington Prosthodontics will start by assessing the ideal number of dental implants you need. The number of teeth to be replaced, amount of bone remaining and the opposing dentition and bite are important factors in determining the ideal plan for you.
  • Once your customized treatment plan is confirmed, the oral surgeon or periodontist will place the dental implants in the jaw bone along with any bone grafting if required.  A provisional bridge is place the same day as your surgery or within 24-48 hours.
  • After three months once the implants have healed, a new, definitive bridge is made to replace your teeth.  This is made out of porcelain or acrylic with titanium reinforcement inside the bridge and linking all the implants together.   The bridge replaces all missing teeth in your jaw, insanely improving the function of your mouth.
  • Once completed, aesthetics and function are restored but long-term follow-up and maintenance with our specialist prosthodontist is essential in achieving a long-lasting result.

Who Should Get All-On-X Dental Implants?

An all-on-x dental implant bridge is a full-arch restorations supported by 5 or more dental implants. It is best suited for people with:

  • Missing many or all teeth in one or both arches
  • Failing dentition – multiple teeth with hopeless prognosis
  • Want immediate results
  • Nonsmokers with good oral hygiene
  • Discomfort with dentures or difficulty eating and speaking with dentures
  • History or fractured or worn teeth

Essential Benefits of All-On-X Dental Implants

The customisation of all-on-x dental implants offers more flexibility for effective implant placement. Additional implants, planned around your specific anatomy and individual circumstances, can help better support your implant bridge and give more options and flexibility should one of your dental implants fail.

Assessing the Costs of an All-On-X Dental Implant Procedure

You may be wondering how an All-on-X dental implant differs from an All-on-4. The treatment approach depends on various factors, including the number of implants needed, any additional procedures required, and the complexity of the bridgework.

All-on-X typically involves more implants than All-on-4, which may influence the overall treatment plan. For a personalised assessment, consult our Specialist Prosthodontist at Mornington Prosthodontics.

FAQs

What is prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is a formally recognised specialist branch of dentistry dedicated to the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth. Common prosthodontic treatments include dentures, dental implants, crowns and bridges. Once they have graduated from dental school, a prosthodontist receives three extra years of training in their chosen field.

Prosthodontists are trained in the field of crown and bridgework, veneers, implant reconstruction, denture work, occlusion, temporomandibular joint function and complex full-mouth oral rehabilitation.

Why do I need to see a prosthodontist?

All dentists are trained in making crowns, bridges, and partial and complete dentures, so why would you need to see a prosthodontist? Prosthodontists are experts in their field. With an additional three years of training, they are much more equipped than your regular dentist to replace anything in your mouth.

Prosthodontists have a specialised skill set to treat, plan, diagnose and manage intricate dental problems. They frequently work in a multi-disciplinary environment with other specialists and are skilled in biomaterials, biomechanics, function and aesthetics.

Do I need a referral?

Patients are often referred to us by their general dental practitioner. A referral gives us a much better understanding of your oral history and any problems you’ve had previously, including how they were managed. Alongside your history, be sure to bring in any past x-rays, exam results or other relevant material for your prosthodontist to discuss.
