What are All-on-4 Dental Implants?

If you want to restore your beautiful smile, it may be time to consult our experienced Dental Specialist at Mornington Prosthodontics. Simply put, the term “all-on-4 dental implants” refers to a procedure that replaces your complete set of teeth in one jaw by using four titanium implants. Only four dental implants are used to support bridge that replaces all your teeth in the jaw. This procedure is typically used to treat patients suffering from multiple missing teeth, severely broken or decayed teeth, or to replace complete dentures with a fixed, permanent solution.

How Does All-on-4 Dental Implant Treatment Work?

While this process isn’t as simple as getting dentures, the good news is that the benefits will be well worth a the effort involved. Here’s how the procedure works:

  • Our Specialist Prosthodontist does a complete assessment of your mouth and works alongside a specialist periodontists or oral surgeon to plan your treatment.
  • Once your prosthodontic plan is in place, the oral surgeon or periodontist will carry out the surgery to place the dental implants.  This can be carried out under local anesthetic, intravenous sedation, or general anesthetic at a local hospital
  • Two titanium implants are placed at the back of your mouth at a 45-degree angle usually without any bone grafting. Two implants are then placed at the front of your mouth to give support to the bridge around the jaw. The bones in your gums will need to be strong and healthy for this procedure to be effective.
  • Following surgery, either the same day or withing 24-48 hours, a provisional bridge is placed.
  • Once the implants heal – which is usually around 4 months, a definitive bridge is made and placed over the implants.
  • The definitive bridge can be made out or porcelain or acrylic and replaced 12 teeth in one jaw.
  • Patients will be required to eat a soft diet until the implants have healed, but it’s a small price to pay for the many benefits.

FAQs

What is prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is a formally recognised specialist branch of dentistry dedicated to the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth. Common prosthodontic treatments include dentures, dental implants, crowns and bridges. Once they have graduated from dental school, a prosthodontist receives three extra years of training in their chosen field.

Prosthodontists are trained in the field of crown and bridgework, veneers, implant reconstruction, denture work, occlusion, temporomandibular joint function and complex full-mouth oral rehabilitation.

Why do I need to see a prosthodontist?

All dentists are trained in making crowns, bridges, and partial and complete dentures, so why would you need to see a prosthodontist? Prosthodontists are experts in their field. With an additional three years of training, they are much more equipped than your regular dentist to replace anything in your mouth.

Prosthodontists have a specialised skill set to treat, plan, diagnose and manage intricate dental problems. They frequently work in a multi-disciplinary environment with other specialists and are skilled in biomaterials, biomechanics, function and aesthetics.

Do I need a referral?

Patients are often referred to us by their general dental practitioner. A referral gives us a much better understanding of your oral history and any problems you’ve had previously, including how they were managed. Alongside your history, be sure to bring in any past x-rays, exam results or other relevant material for your prosthodontist to discuss.
